This covers processes developed for both residual and mixed MSW treatment at all scales

This Rating Report includes both MBT (Mechanical Biological Treatment) processes and MHT (Mechanical Heat Treatment) processes.

The MBT processes include the various different configurations that have been developed to meet a wide range of specific objectives; including production of a bio-stabilised material for landfilling; production of a soil improver; production of a biogas and production of a ‘good quality’ solid fuel.

We have included systems from across the world; in some geographies MBT is known under different acronyms such as BMT, MBV, MBA and MBR.  We have referred to these where appropriate in the report.

The MHT processes (which utilise mechanical and externally derived heat to achieve the overall treatment of the waste) also include autoclave and thermal drying systems.

Normally we list technologies under the company that is the developer of the core biological element (in the case of MBT) or the core thermal element (in the case of MHT) and not under the names of suppliers of the various mechanical components.  However, some MBT projects involve different companies supplying the core mechanical and biological stages of the process that claim the project as a reference plant.  Therefore we have identified engineering partners where that company name is widely associated with MBT or MHT and assess their relevant experience in providing the core process elements (biological or thermal).  In some instances we have listed other companies with whom a technology is often associated, such as a licensee for a particular region of the world.
