Case Study 1

Three U.K. local authorities agreed to combine together and to use pyrolysis as the basis of their waste plan. They had received approaches from a number of suppliers offering to meet their needs and they decided that they needed independent specialists to review both their overall concept and the particular proposals from the suppliers. Juniper was commissioned to review the role of pyrolysis and gasification processes, in general, and within the specific context of their waste plans. Also to provide a specific review of the processes, comparing them with the alternatives and identifying the advantages and disadvantages.

Case Study 2

A major pharmaceutical company commissioned Juniper to advise on ways of disposing of the biomass residues generated during the production of cephalosporin antibiotics.
The company was looking at several options, including an on-site solution. Juniper firstly undertook a review of the feasibility of gasifying biomass to produce energy on site, we then identified the gasification and pyrolysis processes which would meet the fundamental criteria of the project. Approaches were made to these suppliers to participate in an initial enquiry, and an evaluation prepared as the basis of a more formal approach by the client direct.

Case Study 3

A German company, an established producer of cement and other bonding materials with several production sites in Europe and the USA, commissioned Juniper to investigate the feasibility of replacing the existing coal dust firing system by an external firing mechanism, using product gas from a pyrolysis or gasification process. Scrap tyres would be used as the waste stream in the process. In particular the company wished to understand which pyrolysis and gasification technologies were being marketed for this application and to assess how competitive they were. We prepared a custom report evaluating over 25 technologies being marketed for this purpose, with a separate analysis of the suitability of each for the client’s purposes.

Case Study 4

A UK Public Authority commissioned Juniper to provide independent advice on the advantages and disadvantages of incineration versus pyrolysis and gasification; including process issues such as feedstock, energy efficiency, emissions and plant size. We were then asked to compare the economics of the types of process; our experience of their reliability and track record and to draw conclusions for the authority. We were also invited to provide independent expert advice to a public meeting which had been convened to announce the authority’s conclusions.
