Plasma

Support for organisations interested in plasma waste processes

Plasma processes are attracting more interest than ever.  Municipalities in Europe, North America and Asia are considering facilities at scales of up to 1 million tonnes per annum; orders and projects have been announced for processing clinical waste; tyres; hazardous wastes, including spent munitions; shipboard waste on naval vessels and cruise liners; and stabilising incinerator ashes.  Political decision makers are attracted to plasma because they see it as a modern, high technology solution.
Corporates, large and small, sense a significant business opportunity.

Yet, more traditional voices from within the waste management sector say that using plasma for large-scale processing of conventional wastes is unproven, of doubtful economics and that, because of this limited track record, unbankable.

Juniper's Plasma Reports

Plasma, Its Role in Waste Processing: a Decision Maker’s Guide

Management Briefing: This report has just been fully updated and revised (February, 2010) and is a comprehensive overview of plasma technologies published by Juniper.  It brings together Juniper’s knowledge of various plasma processes which are being actively promoted and puts the technology in context as an alternative waste treatment solution. Cost £385

This report (updated October, 2009) covers plasma processes at all scales and for various types of waste. It includes processes in which plasma is the core technology such as plasma combustion; plasma gasification; plasma pyrolysis; those in which plasma is the secondary processing stage to assist in the upgrading of raw syngas from a primary gasification or pyrolysis stage (such as plasma polishing); and also those processes in which plasma is used only as part of ancillary systems such as ash vitrification. Cost £500.

The Worldwide Directory of Developers of Plasma Waste Processing Technologies

Sourcing Guide: This lists the various plasma process developers and provides contact details for the company.  Thirty nine suppliers are included in the Directory.Plasma technologies are seen by many decision makers as sophisticated solutions that offer the potential for complete destruction of waste without the environmental disadvantages that are associated with incineration in many people’s minds. Most existing plasma plants have been built for niche applications.  Plasma suppliers are now turning their attention to MSW and trying to scale-up their plants to handle this kind of waste stream. Cost £30

Plasma: A Cross-reference of Processes to Suppliers

Information Sheet: This report enables those interested in plasma systems to understand which process belongs to which supplier.  Many plasma systems are known simply by acronyms.  These are confusingly similar, for example PGP, PGV and PGVF are plasma gasification technologies, but from three different process companies.  The report cross-references 21 acronyms to both the process names and their supplier. Our consultancy services have included due diligence reviews for banking institutions and finance houses; advice to local authorities; market advice to plasma suppliers; and technical reviews of plasma processes for specific applications.  The following case studies give examples of the types of work we have undertaken.

Case Studies

Case Study 1

We were asked by a financial institution to provide the Independent Technical Report for the stock market listing of a Canadian plasma technology company.

Case Study 2

One of the world’s largest chemical companies commissioned Juniper to undertake a review of technology options for treating gasifying biosludges.  They were interested in a joint development programme with a specialist supplier especially one with a technology with a high degree of flexibility because of the nature of the feedstock.  Plasma gasification technologies were the key focus for this review.  We recommended specific process companies to this US client after having conducted a worldwide comparative analysis of technologies.

Case Study 3

A municipal authority in the UK was interested in obtaining dispassionate advice on the suitability of plasma processes for handling their residual waste treatment needs.  Juniper provided an objective assessment of the current status of technologies, to inform their decision-making process.

Case Study 4

One of the world’s largest waste management companies commissioned Juniper to identify plasma companies that could be partners for certain projects.  We drew up a shortlist of candidates and reported on their relative strengths and weaknesses.
